Ear Cropping (Cosmetic Otoplasty)

 Ear
cropping is an optional surgery performed to meet breed
standards. The optimum time to perform the surgery is
between 8 and 10 weeks of age. However, small breeds such as
miniature pinschers are able to have the surgery for up to 6
months of age. This procedure is cosmetic and more of an art
than a science. Dr. Winter will discuss the preference of
the ear size and shape with owners. After surgery, Dr Winter
glues the ear to a foam support. Owners are instructed the
best method to heal the raw edge. Once it is healed,
appointments are scheduled to properly cone the ears. This
process trains the ears to stand. The post surgery care is
extremely important and required so the ears heal and stand
properly. As with all other surgeries, the patient should be
dropped off the night prior to surgery so we can perform
pre-anesthetic blood work and fast the patient overnight.
